For the producers and users of the pathology and diagnostics coding

Who need safely transferable coded diagnostic request and result data,

The data model for the shareable data is a conceptual high-level framework, which enables mapping and visualising the whole data transaction process, starting from the clinical need, selection and performing of the relevant investigations/tests unequivocally, representing safely transferable results and clinical advice.

That is the recommended model for all diagnostic data transaction.

Unlike the existing code list of PBCL,

This product enables mapping the whole clinical context, allows sufficient granularity and as part of an ontology enables expression of complex relationships between the modelled data items in an expandable system.


Work has been undertaken to develop a generic logical data model for pathology test reporting. The model provides an implementation agnostic representation of the key business entities and data elements that are used to support the sharing of pathology test results between laboratories and requesting organisations.

In line with the other areas within the National Pathology and Diagnostics work, the scope of the current model focuses on haematology and clinical biochemistry (also known as chemical pathology) test reporting.

The model is defined in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and comprises:

  • a tabular definition of the business entities and data elements, together with associated attributes such as data type and cardinality
  • a class diagram that illustrates the relationships between the business entities and summarises the data elements within each

The data model has been used as the primary input into the development and curation (via INTEROPen) of a set of HL7 FHIR STU3 profiles to support the electronic exchange of pathology test results. Please see the ‘Message Specification’ section of this site for further details.
