Proof of Concept

As part of NHS England CCIO7 work streams, NHS Digital are delivering the ability to share pathology results across health and care. Within the scope of this work, NHS Digital are defining Pathology Information Standards aligned with clinical, commissioning and patient needs to support the sharing of pathology tests and results across care settings and organisational boundaries.

The NHS Digital Pathology Diagnostics Programme is looking to establish collaborations in interoperability and information standardisation for key pathology initiatives across Health and Social Care to agree an approach for moving existing pathology estate and infrastructure to a future state based on updated national standards.

NHSx and NHS Digital have recently engaged South, Central and West Commissioning Support Unit (SCW CSU) to deliver a Proof of Concept to demonstrate the end-to-end flow of pathology requests and reports between primary care GP and LIMS systems using the Unified Test List (UTL), and associated UoM via the FHIR Pathology profiles defined by NHS Digital.

SCW are actively working with leading GP system and LIMS suppliers to deliver a series of tests to validate requesting and reporting supplier systems with the aim of producing a retrospective case study and lessons learned log to support standards approval and implementation guidance.
