  • Guidance for COVID-19 and Pathology

The names of tests and the test results relating to COVID-19 have been incorporated into the SNOMED CT clinical extension as part of the 22nd April 2020 release. Guidance for end users on these is incorporated in a document produced in collaboration with the PRSB which can be found here on the COVID-19 information Standards workspace; please note this includes clinical care related terms as well.

In addition, NHS Digital have produced guidance for the national naming, coding and processing of SARS-COV-2 Pathology tests.

Please note that the current version of this guidance (v1.1.7)  covers the population of PMIP NHS003 messages and the mapping of the message payload to SNOMED CT for filing into General Practice EPR systems.

If you are involved only in this data exchange you can ignore the draft status of this document  and use the codes and descriptions found here with confidence.

The next version on the guidance (v2.0) will be published shortly and will contain additional information for Labs and LIMS on naming requestable and reportable items related  to SARS-COV-2 Testing.

  • SNOMED CT UK Clinical Edition, RF2 29.1.0 Release Published

    Published: April 2020

    Dear colleague,

The SNOMED CT UK Clinical Edition, RF2 for April 22nd 2020 is now available for download from the following links:

The SNOMED CT UK Drug extension is not released as part of the SNOMED CT biannual release. SNOMED CT UK Drug Extension data is published on a four-weekly cycle within the "UK Drug Extension, RF2" sub pack on TRUD. Please review the associated documentation for more details.

Release documentation is now only accessible on Delen, at https://hscic.kahootz.com/t_c_home/view?objectId=16607376.

Important changes and information regarding this release:

This is the second emergency COVID-19 “microrelease” for April 2020. Changes are restricted to coding expressivity improvements urgently needed to manage the current pandemic. This very narrowed scope should reduce the “content update penalty” on product consumers, and so reduce barriers to the urgent deployment of the new content to the clinical frontline:

This release remains based on the July 2018 International Edition.

A new tranche of 33 COVID-19 codes are added relating to the current pandemic, in addition to those already released for that same purpose in the 28.1.1 and 29.0.0 Emergency Releases of February and April 2020. The new codes are:

Further incremental “microreleases” of the UK SNOMED CT Clinical Extension will occur with new COVID-19 related content for the NHS. These will coincide with at least the next two scheduled releases of the UK SNOMED CT Drug Extension (20 May and 17 June).

A full release comprised of substantially all new content deferred from the original 1 April release candidate remains to be scheduled, having previously been tentatively planned for October 2020. Similarly, future releases are required to update the UK SNOMED to the prevailing current SNOMED International release.

Combined with the ongoing effects and requirements of the pandemic, this SNOMED release backlog introduces significant uncertainty and opportunity, and our future release schedule therefore remains ultimately “fluid”.

In the near term we are primarily responding to urgent clinical need, but in June/July 2020 will consult our NHS and IT supplier stakeholders in respect of preferred options in respect of the range of possible future release schedules and their scope.

Subscribers were previously advised that, from April 2020 all future PRODUCTION releases of the Drug and Clinical extension content would transition to the BETA release bundling previously provided as technology previews. This transition remains deferred: the PRODUCTION release will remain as before; BETA format releases will continue to be published alongside.

For a more detailed explanation of the issues behind the BETA bundling, see the webinar recording at https://hscic.kahootz.com/t_c_home/view?objectid=54390437

    Reference sets (Refsets)

There are no new UK refsets for the April 22nd 2020 release.

    Cross Mapping

The SNOMED CT to OPCS-4.8, OPCS-4.9 and ICD-10 5th Edition five-character maps are included in this April 22nd 2020 bi-annual release, including minor changes to the ICD10 maps for certain COVID-19 SNOMED codes.

  • Standard tests and test results for COVID-19

As a result of discussions with a number of organisations, a number of standard codes and descriptions for tests and test results related to COVID-19 have now been developed. These have been circulated to Public Health England; NHSX; middleware, OrderComms, Laboratory and GP system suppliers. With their feedback and final agreement these will be published in the UK SNOMED CT Clinical Edition on 22 April 2020. A full of the SNOMED codes and terms can be found in the SNAP Update: Issue 1: April 15th

  • Latest information on COVID-19 and Pathology

In light of the current pandemic, NHS Digital resource has been focused on providing care-critical COVID-19 content for the SNOMED CT release and we are working on a small number of SNOMED CT concepts to support test requesting and reporting

NHSX and NHS Digital are exploring with a number of organisations how to enable tests requests and associated results to flow across NHS organisations with standard codes and descriptions.  We expect to release these national descriptions later this month. In the interim labs should continue to flow the information using their own local descriptions; this activity will also ensure these local descriptions can be linked to the national descriptions following publication.

  • Delay to the RF2 release of UTL v0.4.0 on TRUD

The human-readable version of UTL 0.4.0 was published on 18th March via the Pathology & Diagnostics Team collaboration site.

In the light of current circumstances we have decided not to release the machine-readable RF2 version of v0.4.0 to allow for focus on other priorities.

Future release plans will be shared with our user community as soon as they are available.
