What are the plans for implementation?

The National Information Board (NIB) document 'Personalised Health and Care 2020: A Framework for Action' recommends the move to a single terminology, SNOMED CT, for the direct management of care of an individual across all care settings in England.

SNOMED CT is a NHS approved fundamental standard (SCCI0034); implementation guidelines and requirements are published on the NHS Digital website.

In England:

  • SNOMED CT is being implemented across Primary Care settings from April 2018; Resources and updates are available from NHS Digital.
  • Secondary Care, Acute Care, Mental Health, Community systems, Dentistry and other systems used in the direct management of care of an individual must use SNOMED CT as the clinical terminology before 1 April 2020

How can I request a change?

Requests for any changes to existing SNOMED CT content or for new clinical terms within the UK should be made via the Request Submission Portal (RSP). Users need to register first to request new terms or changes. It is possible once registered to view existing requests from other users to see if the term has already been requested.

Requests for consideration in SNOMED CT UK Edition 6 monthly releases must be submitted by:

  • 30th June for the October release
  • 30th December for the April release

We recommend bulk / complex concept requests are submitted as early as possible to allow sufficient time for consideration otherwise these may need to be carried over to the following release.

The Editorial Principles for the UK Edition of SNOMED CT describe policies applied to both UK-specific content, and content added for eventual inclusion in the International Edition.  This may be of use to those submitting requests for content change, in helping to inform how concepts and descriptions are structured, including guidelines applied to specific types of concept.
