Welcome to the Clinical Coding Apprenticeship Trailblazer workspace.

A Trailblazer Group has formed to develop an apprenticeship standard to cover the role of a Clinical Coder. An expression of interest was submitted to the Institute of Apprenticeships and has been approved for development. We have the required 10 employers to move this process forward but would welcome involvement from other interested Trusts and the wider Coding Community. The proposed standard will be used to train new recruits but can also be used to up skill existing staff so we want to ensure any programme developed is fit for purpose and can be used nationally.

Apprenticeships are a huge agenda for the NHS. April 2017 saw the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy which means all Trusts must pay 0.5% of their total wage bill into a digital account to fund apprenticeship training. In addition to this the Public Sector Target was also introduced which states that all Public Sector organisations must have 2.3% of their workforce enrolled onto apprenticeship programmes. This equates to a national target for the NHS of 28,000 for 2017/18. With cuts to CPD funding and the removal of the bursaries, Apprenticeships are now an attractive alternative route to gain skills and qualifications.

Here you can find out more about the Trailblazer development, register your interest in being part of the employer group and sign up to our webinars for further information.
