  • Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) and Clinical Coding

    Published: April 2018

The existing Information Governance Toolkit (IGT) v14.1 is being replaced by the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) in May 2018. (https://www.dsptoolkit.nhs.uk/)

The Terminology and Classifications Delivery Service has been working with Data Security Centre colleagues to ensure that the IGT v14.1 clinical coding audit and training requirements (IGT 505 and 514 for audit and IGT 510 and 516 for training) and associated guidance for both Acute and Mental Health Trusts are captured in this new Toolkit, albeit in a different format.

Both Acute and Mental Health Trusts are deemed ‘Large Organisations’ in the DSPT.

Clinical coders must refer to National Data Guardian Standard 1 in the Data Security and Protection Toolkit Assertion 1.7 Data Quality (Evidence codes 1.7.2, 1.7.3, 1.7.4) for clinical coding audit assertions and evidence requirements.

Clinical coders must refer to National Data Guardian Standard 3 in the Data Security and Protection Toolkit Assertion 3 Training (Evidence code 3.4.3) for clinical coding training, i.e. Specialist Training, assertions and evidence requirements.

Supporting information will provide hyperlinks to the associated guidance on Delen which will remain relatively unchanged, just in a different format. A further notification will be released when the audit and training guidance becomes available on Delen.

For an Organisation to be Satisfactory they must complete all of the mandatory evidence items in their toolkit. Evidence items 1.7.2, 1.7.3 and 1.7.4 (covering clinical coding audit) and 3.4.3 (covering clinical coding training) are mandatory items.
