  • Update to COVID-19 National Clinical Coding Standards and Guidance

    Published: April 2020

We have received a large number of queries through the product support helpdesk regarding the COVID-19 standards and guidance. Therefore the COVID-19 National Clinical Coding Standards and Guidance have been updated throughout to provide clarification based on these queries.

We have also sought further guidance from the WHO on the assignment of U07.2 Emergency use of U07.2 for cases of clinically diagnosed COVID-19 with a negative test result. We can confirm that U07.2 must be assigned when laboratory testing for COVID-19 is negative, reported as inconclusive, or has not been carried out but the responsible consultant confirms a diagnosis of COVID-19 based on clinical or epidemiological evidence (i.e. COVID-19 is clinically diagnosed and therefore not ruled out).

We recommend you familiarise yourself with this updated guidance and if this answers a previously submitted helpdesk query that no longer requires a resolution please contact information.standards@nhs.net quoting your service desk reference number to retract your query.

    Kind regards

  • SNOMED CT UK Clinical Edition, RF2 29.1.0 Release Published

    Published: April 2020

    Dear colleague,

The SNOMED CT UK Clinical Edition, RF2 for April 22nd 2020 is now available for download from the following links:

The SNOMED CT UK Drug extension is not released as part of the SNOMED CT biannual release. SNOMED CT UK Drug Extension data is published on a four-weekly cycle within the "UK Drug Extension, RF2" sub pack on TRUD. Please review the associated documentation for more details.

Release documentation is now only accessible on Delen, at https://hscic.kahootz.com/t_c_home/view?objectId=16607376.

Important changes and information regarding this release:

This is the second emergency COVID-19 “microrelease” for April 2020. Changes are restricted to coding expressivity improvements urgently needed to manage the current pandemic. This very narrowed scope should reduce the “content update penalty” on product consumers, and so reduce barriers to the urgent deployment of the new content to the clinical frontline:

This release remains based on the July 2018 International Edition.

A new tranche of 33 COVID-19 codes are added relating to the current pandemic, in addition to those already released for that same purpose in the 28.1.1 and 29.0.0 Emergency Releases of February and April 2020. The new codes are:

Further incremental “microreleases” of the UK SNOMED CT Clinical Extension will occur with new COVID-19 related content for the NHS. These will coincide with at least the next two scheduled releases of the UK SNOMED CT Drug Extension (20 May and 17 June).

A full release comprised of substantially all new content deferred from the original 1 April release candidate remains to be scheduled, having previously been tentatively planned for October 2020. Similarly, future releases are required to update the UK SNOMED to the prevailing current SNOMED International release.

Combined with the ongoing effects and requirements of the pandemic, this SNOMED release backlog introduces significant uncertainty and opportunity, and our future release schedule therefore remains ultimately “fluid”.

In the near term we are primarily responding to urgent clinical need, but in June/July 2020 will consult our NHS and IT supplier stakeholders in respect of preferred options in respect of the range of possible future release schedules and their scope.

Subscribers were previously advised that, from April 2020 all future PRODUCTION releases of the Drug and Clinical extension content would transition to the BETA release bundling previously provided as technology previews. This transition remains deferred: the PRODUCTIION release will remain as before; BETA format releases will continue to be published alongside.

For a more detailed explanation of the issues behind the BETA bundling, see the webinar recording at https://hscic.kahootz.com/t_c_home/view?objectid=54390437

    Reference sets (Refsets)

There are no new UK refsets for the April 22nd 2020 release.

    Cross Mapping

The SNOMED CT to OPCS-4.8, OPCS-4.9 and ICD-10 5th Edition five-character maps are included in this April 22nd 2020 bi-annual release, including minor changes to the ICD10 maps for certain COVID-19 SNOMED codes.

  • Postponement of Terminology and Classifications Annual Customer Survey

    Published: April 2020

    Dear colleague,

Around this time of year, we usually publish our annual customer survey, which provides very valuable feedback and enables us to refine and improve our products and services. However, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, we have decided to defer publication of the 2020 survey.  Both within and outside the NHS, many teams are dealing with additional demands in response to the pandemic, and we feel that it would be inappropriate to issue our survey at such a challenging time. We intend to launch the survey at a suitable future point and will provide further information in due course.

In the interim, please feel free to provide feedback about any aspect of our products and services via information.standards@nhs.net

  • Update the Query Resolution Database – COVID-19

    Published: April 2020

    Dear colleague,

The Query Resolution Database has been updated to include all COVID-19 queries we have resolved to date. As we resolve more queries we will continue to publish guidance onto COVID-19 National Clinical Coding Standards and Guidance that we consider would be useful to the wider coding service. Further resolutions will be added to the Database in due course.

  • April 2020 NICIP Release

    Published: April 2020

    Dear colleague,

The National Interim Clinical Imaging Procedure (NICIP) code set April 2020 Release is now available for download.

    Important information about this release

In light of the current pandemic, NHS Digital resource has been focused on providing care-critical COVID-19 content for the SNOMED CT release. As a result, the April 2020 NICIP release will only include NICIP-OPCS-4.9 mapping update and no changes to NICIP-SNOMED CT mappings and no new NICIP code additions.

All other NICIP files will be static from the June 2019 release and can continue to be used though files dated with the April 2020 release are included but remain static. The next full release will again follow our schedule for October 2020.

Further incremental “microreleases” of the UK SNOMED CT Clinical Extension will occur with new COVID-19 related content for the NHS. These will coincide with at least the next three scheduled releases of the UK SNOMED CT Drug Extension (22 April, 20 May and 17 June). A full release comprised of substantially all new content deferred from this current scheduled 1 April release is planned for October 2020. However, the ongoing effects and requirements of the pandemic may require this plan to change; the final contents of the October 2020 release will be informed by a consultation that NHS Digital will carry out in July to assess readiness of the NHS and its IT suppliers.

Subscribers were previously advised that, from April 2020 all future PRODUCTION releases of the Drug and Clinical extension content would transition to the BETA release bundling previously provided as technology previews here. This transition is also now deferred: the PRODUCTIION release will remain as before; BETA format releases will continue to be published alongside.

For a more detailed explanation of the issues behind the BETA bundling, watch our webinar recording.

    Reference sets (Refsets)

There are 4 new UK refsets for the April 2020 release, as detailed above. All are relevant to COVID-19.

    Cross Mapping

The SNOMED CT to OPCS-4.8, OPCS-4.9 and ICD-10 5th Edition five character maps are included in this April 2020 bi-annual release. The ICD-10 four character only maps reference set (999002261000000108) has been removed completely from the release from June 2019 onwards.
