  • Digital Learning Solutions platform Guidance

    Published: September 2019

The Terminology and Classifications Delivery Service have received an influx of enquiries regarding registration for the Digital Learning Solutions platform.

Having looked into the situation, we realise that the Learning Portal - Quick Start Guide should be improved to ensure that the guidance on how to register and access courses is clearer for our learners. Please follow this link to the Digital Learning Solutions – How to register guidance before registering and if you have any questions, please contact information.standards@nhs.net.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we aim to have the full revised Quick Start Guidance document available early week commencing 23 September. If you are an Approved Clinical Coding Trainer or Manager who is directing Clinical Coding Standards or Standards Refresher course delegates to register for the Basic Introduction to Clinical Coding or the Four-Step Coding Process – ICD-10 eLearning modules, please ensure you advise them to follow the Digital Learning Solutions – How to register guidance until the Quick start guide is updated.

We will issue a further blog post once the updated Quick start guide is available.

  • 2020-21 Clinical Coding Auditor Programme (CCAP) and Clinical Coding Trainer Programme (CCTP)

    Published: August 2019

    Dear Colleague

The Terminology and Classifications Delivery Service can confirm that it is our intention to initially release the dates only of the assessment days/courses/forums within both of these programmes during November/December 2019. Prices and venues will be confirmed during late January – early February 2020. The release of these dates, minus venues and cost, is purely to allow potential delegates to schedule their calendars appropriately reducing the possibility of missing the assessment days.

It is important to emphasise that the dates we release during November/December 2019 may be subject to change and will be tentative dates only pending full details being released to the service in January/February 2020.

Applications for the programmes will not be accepted until full details have been released to the service (late January – early February 2020).

An early notification list is in operation for both programmes, which will ensure that you receive notification 7-10 days in advance of wider release to the service.  If you would like to be added to this list, please let us know via information.standards@nhs.net detailing the programme you are interested in.

    Kind regards

  • Clinical Coding Auditor Programme (CCAP) Assessment Day 15 May 2019

    Published: June 2019

As a result of the excessive and unacceptable noise levels experienced by all candidates sitting this year’s Assessment Day, the Terminology and Classifications Delivery Service has made the decision to uplift all candidate scores by 3% for both the practical and theory papers

It is important to note that this decision applies to this year’s candidates only and will not be routinely applied in the future.

We are pleased to confirm that 22 candidates out of 33 who attended the Assessment Day on 15 May have successfully passed all elements and as a result will be invited to attend an Audit Workshop later this year. This, in, turn gives a pass rate of 67% this year.

We do our utmost to ensure the suitability of a venue for all our training delivery and will continue to do so. Venues are asked whether there are any building/renovation works scheduled before we confirm any bookings.  They are aware of the purpose of the booking, they are advised that the booking is for an Assessment Day, for example. Unfortunately, they are not always aware of plans in their immediate surrounding area.

  • National Clinical Coding Standards Reference Books - Hard Copies

    Published: June 2019

Following discussions with our publisher TSO, it has become clear that the demand for hard copies of the reference books has reduced significantly. Since the introduction of the Print on Demand Service in 2017, sales have reduced by almost 80%. In 2017, 726 reference books were sold, compared to just 155 in 2018. The books would require a significant price increase to offset the higher production costs, which makes the Print on Demand service a non-viable option.

Therefore, we have taken the decision to cease production of hard copies of the reference books from the 2019 version onwards. Existing publications such as the ICD-10 and OPCS-4.8 books and the Basic Anatomy & Physiology Manual are still available to purchase through the TSO, and we plan to release hard copies of the OPCS-4.9 books ready for implementation in April 2020.

Electronic versions of the reference books will continue to be available for download from Delen and from the Classifications Online when this goes live.

  • Mental Health Clinical Coding Training Questionnaire

    Published: March 2019

The Terminology and Classifications Delivery Service is undertaking a review of the training materials and options currently available to Mental Health coding departments, namely the Mental Health Clinical Coding Standards Course (MHCCSC) and Mental Health Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course (MHCCSRC).

The purpose of this review is to assess whether or not  the materials are fit for purpose (i.e. that they cover those aspects of Mental Health activity to equip a trainee coder with the requisite skills and knowledge), they are delivered in the most appropriate format possible (i.e. modular, blended learning – a mixture of classroom based and online training, etc.), and that they are still relevant.

If you have previously been - or are currently employed as - a Mental Health coder or have attended either the MHCCSC or MHCCSRC, we would appreciate your input by taking a few minutes to complete the below questionnaire. Please give your honest and constructive thoughts on your experience of attending a Mental Health Clinical Coding Standards or Refresher Course, the deadline for completion is the 27th May 2019.

The questionnaire can be accessed here.

    Kind regards
