OPCS.4.8 Volume, Chapter S Skin - note
Published: May 2017
Feedback indicates that there has been some confusion surrounding the update to the excludes note in OPCS.4.8 Volume 1 at the start of Chapter S Skin, in relation to category T32 Reconstruction of anterior abdominal wall.
The purpose of the note at Chapter S Skin is not to exclude all operations on skin of abdominal wall, but rather to instruct coders that if there is a procedure classifiable to category T32 Reconstruction of anterior abdominal wall, then the code from T32 must be assigned in a primary position, and as per the note at T32, Codes from Chapter S may be used to enhance these codes.
A code from T32 should only be assigned when the OPCS-4 Alphabetical Index directs you to a code from this category.
We can confirm that both the note at Chapter S Skin in the Tabular List, and the guidance at the start of Chapter S Skin in the OPCS-4 standards book will be reviewed to ensure that this point is clarified. We will inform the service of any future updates via the usual routes.
